Prime Bank Africa recorded the largest gain in market share among Kenyan banks in 2025, strengthening its position in the country’s competitive banking sector as its balance sheet expanded and investments in digital banking and financial services continued. According to figures shared by Ann Kamau, a Strategic Finance Leader, the bank’s Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) weighted market-share index rose by 1.4 percentage points to 4.3% in 2025, up from 2.9% in 2024. The increase highlights the bank’s growing presence in Kenya’s financial services industry and places it closer to the 5% market-share threshold associated with Tier One banks.
Strong balance sheet supports expansion
Prime Bank Africa’s growth was accompanied by a significant expansion of its balance sheet. The bank’s assets increased by 45% to KSh 274 billion, while customer deposits grew by 19.1% to KSh 171.2 billion. Shareholders’ funds more than doubled to KSh 100 billion, further strengthening the bank’s financial position. The figures point to an expanding institution that is increasing its scale while consolidating its position in a market dominated by established banking groups.
Climbing the banking sector rankings
Prime Bank Africa has also made significant progress over the past decade. In 2016, the bank ranked 16th nationally, with a market share of 1.8%. By 2025, it had moved up to 10th place, reflecting its steady rise in the competitive banking landscape. Its market share of 4.3% puts it 0.7 percentage points below the 5% threshold associated with Tier One classification, marking an important milestone in its growth trajectory.
Investment in digital banking and payments
Beyond its financial performance, Prime Bank Africa has continued expanding its branch network and investing in remittance services, payment solutions and corporate digital banking. These investments support its broader growth strategy as banks increasingly compete on service delivery, digital capabilities and the ability to meet the changing needs of businesses and customers. The bank’s latest performance signals a notable shift in Kenya’s banking landscape, with its rising market share and stronger balance sheet positioning it for further growth. As competition intensifies across the sector, Prime Bank Africa’s progress will be worth watching, particularly as it moves closer to the market-share benchmark associated with the country’s largest banking institutions.
