Kenya’s fertiliser industry is entering a new phase following the launch of the Fertilizer and Soil Health Alliance of Kenya (FASHAK), a new organisation that will replace the Fertiliser Association of Kenya (FAK). The alliance aims to expand the industry’s focus beyond conventional fertilisers to embrace a broader approach to soil health, bringing together companies supplying different agricultural inputs that help farmers improve yields and crop quality.

Dr Bimal Kantaria Speaking during the launch, Dr Bimal Kantaria, chair of the alliance and Managing Director of Elgon Kenya, said the new organisation reflects a shift towards a more integrated approach to supporting farmers. “We are moving from representing fertiliser companies to being a more holistic soil health association, looking at all inputs companies, who assist our farmers to increase yields and improve the quality of their crops,” said Dr Kantaria.
He added that the alliance’s membership would extend beyond mineral fertiliser manufacturers and suppliers to include companies dealing in organic fertilisers, soil conditioners and agro-vet products. The broader membership is intended to bring together different players in the agricultural inputs sector around the shared goal of improving soil health and supporting more productive farming systems.

FASHAK Chief Executive Officer Dr Lillian Mbuthia said the alliance aligns with an integrated approach to soil health through the promotion of integrated soil fertility management. This approach recognises the importance of addressing soil fertility through complementary practices and inputs, with the aim of sustaining soil productivity and improving agricultural performance. The formation of the alliance signals a wider industry focus on soil health as a foundation for productive and sustainable agriculture in Kenya.

By bringing together companies across the agricultural inputs value chain, FASHAK aims to provide a broader platform for advancing soil health and supporting farmers in improving crop yields and quality.
