Kenya Renames October 10 Public Holiday to Mazingira Day for Environmental Conservation

President William Ruto has officially signed into law the Statute Law (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill, 2024, ushering in significant changes to 16 Acts of Parliament. One of the standout amendments is the renaming of the October 10 public holiday, formerly known as Utamaduni Day, to Mazingira Day.

This move underscores Kenya’s commitment to environmental protection and conservation. Mazingira Day will now serve as an annual opportunity for all Kenyans to engage in meaningful environmental activities, such as tree-planting and conservation efforts.

The decision is part of the government’s broader initiative to accelerate the 10-year, 15 billion tree-planting program, which aims to restore forests, wetlands, and rangelands across the country.

President Ruto’s signing of the bill marks a significant step forward in Kenya’s environmental stewardship and underscores the nation’s dedication to sustainable practices for the benefit of current and future generations.
