May 15,2019 ,Nairobi. The department of Cooperatives in the Ministry of Agriculture has held a sensitization meeting for coffee farmer’s cooperatives Societies at Kimabole FCS in Bungoma County on preparation of coffee Nurseries.
The exercise was held in consultation with the coffee Research institute.
This meeting was necessitated by the need by the department to support the co-operative societies to increase production through increased numbers of coffee bushes.
The co-operatives are expected to raise good quality coffee nurseries in order to enable their member farmer’s access quality seedlings at subsidized prices.
Deputy Governor Prof. Charles Ngome, urged the farmers present to embrace coffee production as a major avenue of emancipation from poverty.
He noted the pivotal role the department of Agriculture held in the County and
assured the farmers of the county’s support in ensuring farmers are well
supported in their endeavors.
The Bungoma County Executive Committee Member CECM for Agriculture,Livestock,Fisheries,Irrigation and Co-Operative Development Hon.Mathews Wanjala Makanda lauded all the co-operative farmers and their chairpersons for turning out in large numbers.
He revealed to farmers the priority coffee production has been given by the present government noting that each factory had been supplied with coffee seedling for greater yield.
The following was taught;
Requirements for preparation of coffee seedbed
1. Ballast
2. Pure river sand (well sieved),
3. Bricks, 3m wide,12m long or more
Procedure
1.Start with ballast at the base of the bed for proper drainage
2. Layer up with pure river sand sieved,
3. Plant the seeds
4. Cover with a clear polythene sheet
Present also were the Chief Officer for Cooperative Ms. Sella Mutsotso, Chief Officer for Livestock Mr. John Wasike, the area Member of County Assembly MCA for Chesikaki Hon.Ben Kipkut and directors from the department.
