The National Potato Council of Kenya (NPCK) has noted significant potential in the export of both processed and ware potatoes. In a recent update, the council revealed that it is actively working with various processors to enhance the supply of potato varieties such as Markies to premium markets.

To streamline production and ensure consistent quality, NPCK is engaging farmers through structured contract farming arrangements. These agreements are designed to strengthen farmer-market linkages, guarantee buyers for farmers’ produce, and promote the cultivation of high-value potato varieties.

In addition, the council confirmed that it is currently in discussions with several potato exporters, aiming to expand Kenya’s footprint in the international potato market.

To support this initiative, Markies seed potatoes are now readily available through NPCK’s digital platform, Viazi Soko, which connects farmers with certified seed suppliers and other critical services across the potato value chain.

This multi-stakeholder approach is expected to not only improve the livelihoods of farmers but also enhance the competitiveness of Kenya’s potato sector globally.
