Irrigation Operator – R&D – (Fixed Term Contract)

Reporting to the Agronomy and QMS Technician in charge of monitoring and controlling water treatment, Fertigation/Irrigation process greenhouse climate in the R&D farm.

Key responsibilities

❖ Ensures sterilization of irrigation water as per the protocols to achieve set standards.
❖ Ensures conditioning/treatment of drinking water to make it fit for human consumption.
❖ Samples the different input and drain solutions in different crops and crop stages for analysis by site lab
or an accredited laboratory whenever required.
❖ Ensures correct recipes formulated by the Technician and adapted as per crop needs/ lab analysis are
implemented for quality seed production (active consultation required).
❖ Ensures timely requisition and mixing of fertilizer and dosing of various fertilizer solutions (recipes), both
at the Main station and sub stations to achieve the desired target pH/EC.
❖ Monitors irrigation of the crops in the greenhouses to ensure it is done with the appropriate recipe
specifications and with prevailing weather conditions in mind.
❖ Ensures climate is controlled through setting the right parameters for each crop on climate computer(s)
to achieve conducive growing conditions.
❖ Ensures that all Fertigation machines and equipment’s including drip lines are in good working
conditions and promptly reports any malfunction for repair.
❖ Supports the production team on matters regarding water management to achieve a healthy crop
throughout the cropping cycle.
❖ Facilitates plant treatment through drips (drenching) in liaison with crop protection technician when
❖ Ensures all irrigation and Climate related data is collected, tabulated and presented on time for analysis
and decision making.
❖ Ensures supervisors on duty are briefed on fertigation processes including trouble shooting and
reporting when on weekend and Holiday duty for prompt remedial action in case of failure
❖ Ensures all equipment and structures are serviced regularly and records kept accordingly (Liaison with
Agronomy & QMS Technician and Engineering Technician R&D)
❖ Ensures adherence to Phytosanitary standards in all Fertigation processes to control pathogens.
❖ Ensures all QMS documents related to irrigation are reviewed at least annually to capture any process
❖ Enforces HSE rules and regulations and champions the implementation of the Syngenta HSE policy in
all business operations.
❖ Any other tasks & projects as may be allocated from time to time.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate must possess the following qualification and competencies:
❖ Diploma in Water and irrigation management, Diploma in Horticulture/Agriculture and 3 years in relevant
❖ Knowledge in hydroponics
❖ Good interpersonal and communication skills.
❖ Demonstrated experience in Microsoft Office with excellent organizational skills.
❖ Must possess a proven track record of leading teams with good problem-solving skills.
