1. On average, after factoring in all the costs and expenses, what is the total revenue brought in by farming coffee in one acre over one year?

2. What crop has the highest revenue per acre in Kenya? How much per acre per year?

3. What is the average cost per year per acre to lease relatively fertile land for farming purposes?

I know how important it will be to practice crop rotation, but after the tomatoes, I am not sure what else to plant. I have read that legumes are good after tomatoes ( heavy feeders) because the are nitrogen fixing. Are there any legumes that can be grown in a greenhouse in this hot part of Kenya? Can you assist me with a suitable crop rotation 4 yr plan (4 unrelated crops) to plant each season?

Good evening people. We are a young horticultural company based in Eldoret majoring on wooden greenhouse packages for tomato and capsicum cultivation and irrigation systems. We are looking to get into a partnership with serious marketing bodies in a contracted cultivation system whereby our clients and our own farm could get direct market linkage for our produce. We have the capacity to cultivate and get farmers to do greenhouse cultivation of the above said crops for both the local and export market. Ideas for other crops too are welcome as long as there is ready and sustainable market. Any interested parties, please call us or email us at hortigrid@gmail.com

I have rented 1 acre in Ngoliba, Thika. I have just experienced a poor harvest with the sentinel hybrid watermelon, did everything i could, but had a lot of disease crisis which unfortunately did not respond to a great amount of pesticides used, especially with thrips. Most of my 'mature' fruits have rust on the surface, while majority are disfigured. The rest rotted, aborted or have white form on the surface. I wish to replant watermelon again in the next season, can i replant on this farm? Is it too late to re-start,considering the climate pattern? I need expert advise to succeed this time around. Thanks.

My question regards Red Passion F1 farming. It is stated that you can harvest upto 23,000.00 Kg per acre. I believe this is the weight at the time of harvest. My question is, what is he weight of this harvest after drying the onions up, for longer storage?. What is the percentage weight loss on drying the onions?. Secondly, can these onions do well in the Chwele region of Bungoma county?. Thank you very much for your assistance. Kind regards Zed.

I live in Kabale district in Uganda and work with a conservation organization which is promoting fruit growing for the communities so that they reduce dependency on the forest resources for their income. We want to begin with passion and tree tomato fruits. What I need to know is the time they begin to bear fruits and how long they take before they die or stop producing fruits. I also need to know about spacing during planting and the disease that most affect them and the pesticides to use. If we need to use fertilizers, which type is best. Thank you Henry Mfitundinda

Trust this finds you well. This is my first time to do green house farming. I’m doing tomatoes; Anna F1. I have prepared my nursery using coco peat in trays and they are just germinating. I have few questions.

1. Could somebody please advice the best time to apply fertilizers on the nursery and which one?

2. Somebody was telling me I can transplant the plants after one week although small they will still survive and I will be cutting my waiting time to harvest by two to three weeks. Is it okey noting normally we wait for 4-5 weeks before we do transplant?

3. What about planting the seed directly to the bed instead of nursery first then transplanting? Suppose after transplanting some plants dies or are cutoff by pest and you don’t have spare one can one plant seed directly for that matter. Thanks kamau wa njuguna

Good afternoon. I have 2 questions for you.

1) Last year, my sis and I rented 3 acres in Mwea. We were planning to do watermelons but because of the rains, we first had to plant green grams to wait for the rains to pass. We were lucky enough to get over 120kgs of green grams. I would like to request if you can give me a contact person or place where we can sell the yield. At the moment, the local market in Mwea is very low.

2) We are planning to do danias and courgettes in Ngong (in a greenhouse). We would appreciate your advice concerning dania and courgette growing. We plan to do this starting next week.

1. I have not seen any passions being grown there but was wondering whether the area is conducive for such growth, being a sugar belt region?

2. Where would be the closest place to there to get passion fruit seedlings?

3. What other horticultural plants would do well in the region?

Please advice. Thank you.

I have a care taker and readily available casual workers but I'm yet to find suitable professional extension officers to provide consultation and guidance to my project. I have made numerous visits to the area agriculture office but in vain. My cabbages were recently attacked by cat worms despite my use of insecticides. Since I'm prepared to invest heavily, kindly refer a suitable and experienced agronomist who may provide me with the much needed guidance so that my farm practices are carried out to the highest standards possible. Hi!I would like to plant different varieties of apples at Gatundu in Kiambu county ie in a coffee growing area. What varieties, particularly disease resistant ones, do you recommend and where do I buy certified seedlings? I have read that Granny Smith is ideal for pollination of most other varieties. Can it also do well in this area and are seedlings available locally. In case these seedlings are not available is one allowed to import and what are the procedures given that our bureaucracy is frightening?

Since April 2010, I have been associated with self-help group in the Eastlands part of Kenya that wishes to start micro-urban farming units for household food security. Our focus is to encourage families living in slums to reduce their expenditure of food by meeting some of the basic household vegetable needs. Are there lessons of experience that we can benefit from? Peter Mbuchi

Thank you for the great work!Refering to your article on greenhouse tomatoes farming, you didn't highlight whether it's necessary to do fumigation before planting.Kindly advice. I understand that application of fresh manure & urea (High N fertilizers) will encourage tomatoes to blossom but reduce fruit size. What quantities should be applied after the first fruit per plant?.Thank you.

Iam interested in growing watermelons commercially in our farm which is in kiambogo area near Elementaita 30kms from Nakuru. Other farmers have tried growing them unsuccessfully and iam being discouraged. My Agro vet advises me that the Hybrid sukari F1 seed is proven and tested and that i should go ahead and do it. My worry is that the seed is expensive costing sh5000 per half kilo not withstanding the inputs like fertilizers, labour etc. What would you advise me to do? Iam very interested but i need proper guidance before i can make this move.
